The Design Futures Lab is a unique collaborative group of students and industry professionals that perform engaging, open-ended and real-world projects.
The projects performed by The Design Futures Lab are ambitious, long-term, sustainability-focused and meaningful. They are well beyond the scope of normal classrooms, allowing students to venture into the unknown, make real discoveries, learn from failures and contribute to society in meaningful ways. Our focus for 2023 is material science and invention applied at the architectural scale.
For Melbourne Design Week 2023 the students from The Design Futures Lab have built a series of pavilions that act as a sensorial walkway through which to approach and contemplate the wonder and potential future of creating with reclaimed waste materials. The exhibition, hosted at Geelong Sacred Heart College, showcase three experimental transition spaces that challenge our perceptions of how our waste can be utilised as an alternate resource in creating the world we want – a world where we rethink and reimagine the circular lifecycle of materials in the built environment.
The pavilions highlight this critical point in time, where the weight of the built environment is exceeding the mass of the grown natural world on our planet. Each space is a testing ground for students to learn about architecture, design, technology, and the sustainable circular economy of materials.
After Melbourne Design Week, the Design Futures Lab will shift focus to create a second exhibition comprising a series of biomaterial and grown pavilions for Geelong Design Week to be held in October 2023.
