Low sensory / relaxed Seating availableProductive Disruptions presents the work of more than 20 creative practitioners from around the world that are working in ways to expand the apprehension and influence of their disciplines.
Disruptive approaches can be stigmatised as troublesome or uncooperative, yet these non-traditional methods can be highly productive. They require an openness and re-working of expectations and ultimately they shift a status quo.
Projects by established practitioners will be presented as physical-scale models, carefully constructed by masters of architecture students from Monash University’s Art, Design and Architecture faculty. This exchange between practitioner and student nurturing agency in our future designers.
Curated by Danielle Peck, co-director of Architecture Associates and academic, this exhibition is her first curatorial presentation of research she is undertaking in her role as Industry Fellow at Monash University.
Participants will be exhibiting works from Melbourne, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York, London, Athens, Milan and Madrid.

Assemble is a multi-disciplinary collective working across architecture, design and art. Founded in 2010 to undertake a single self-built project, Assemble has since delivered a diverse and award-winning body of work, whilst retaining a democratic and co-operative working method that enables built, social and research-based work at a variety of scales, both making things and making things happen.
Callum Morton is an artist, Professor and Director of Monash Art Projects (MAP). He has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1990. His selected solo exhibitions include shows at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Los Angeles (1999), Tommy Lund Gallery, Copenhagen (2000), Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne, The National Gallery of Victoria @ Federation Square (2003),The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (2003), GOMA, Brisbane (2010) and at The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2005).
Monash Art Projects (MAP) is a collaborative studio that works with individual artists and artist-led teams to produce permanent and temporary public art projects. Through a host of contexts and outcomes including exhibitions, conferences, publications and public art projects, MAP critically and poetically reanimates how we regard and experience public space.
cityLAB is an architecture and urban research think tank situated within UCLA’s Department of Architecture and Urban Design. cityLAB explores the challenges facing the 21st century metropolis through research and design, expanding the possibilities for cities to grow more livably, sustainably, and equitably.
Marta Nowak is an architect and a founding principal of AN.ONYMOUS – a transdisciplinary design firm. She focuses on the relationship between human body and machine in the context of architecture and urban design, looking specifically at mobility, micro-spaces, and prosthetic technology.
Belief in the power of social interaction to improve daily life underlies Koning Eizenberg‘s interest in inclusive and sustainable neighbourhoods and rethinking housing, community and educational settings. Our design process is collaborative and structured to help individuals, organisations, and cities realise their goals. It draws on the active participation of Principals Hank Koning, Julie Eizenberg, Brian Lane and Nathan Bishop and is supported by a diverse design and technical team who are similarly invested in humanist values and environmental agenda. The result is an influential body of work that has been extensively published in the US and abroad and earned over 200 awards for design, sustainability and historic preservation.
Lyons is a creative practice that works design into the heart of everything they do. They make architecture from ideas – big ideas of course – but also subtle and small ones, visual or technological, complex or merely practical. Their practice aims to collaborate deep into every creative discussion, to deliver architectural and urban designs that shape, serve, and support communities in Melbourne and around Australia.
Jefa Greenaway RAIA MDIA (Wailwan|Kamilaroi) is founding director of Greenaway Architects, a University of Melbourne senior academic spanning over two decades, and an AILA National Cultural Ambassador. He’s championed Indigenous led design thinking for three decades as a registered architect in NSW/VIC/ACT, as founding Director of Indigenous Architecture + Design Australia, and as co-author of the International Indigenous Design Charter, with a particular interest in design equity and Country-centred design. He was a 2020 Design Institute of Australia’s (DIA) ‘Hall of Fame’ inductee, signifying an outstanding contribution to Australian design and was recently named in the Qantas 100 Inspiring Australians, celebrating their centenary.
Architecture Associates creates spaces for cultural exchange. Believing that all of society benefits from environments that are inclusive and reflect the communities they serve; they do this by embedding stories of culture, place, and ecology into buildings they design, specialising in projects for the creative sector. The practice is directed by Danielle Peck and Sam Hunter.
Mike Hewson is a visual artist with a background in structural engineering and heavy-civil construction. His award-winning projects pioneer new ways to merge conceptual art projects into the public realm. Hewson works to prove we can in fact do things that are considered untenable in a public setting. Each project aims to catalyse fresh conversation about how the bureaucratic and managerial aspects of power are shaping our public lives, asking if we like that shape or if we’d like to consider other options.
Molonglo sees property development as the willing of architecture into being; from an abstraction of drawings and ideas into something to be touched and lived in. Molonglo does this through property development and investment, research and publishing in Australia and Greece.
Royffe Flynn is an architecture practice and design consultancy delivering contextually sensitive projects. We have specialist knowledge and experience across research, architectural design, project and development management, allowing us to offer strategic thinking to shape initial project briefs and manage their progression.
nARCHITECTS is a Brooklyn based architecture office led by Founding Partners Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang. The practice was founded with the goal of addressing contemporary issues in architecture through conceptually driven, socially engaging and technologically innovative work. Their work instigates interactions between buildings, public space, and their dynamically changing contexts. In projects such as Carmel Place (New York City’s first micro unit building), the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, the design center A/D/O, the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center, and the renovation of Chicago Navy Pier, nARCHITECTS is tackling the most pressing issues that our cities face – how we live, work and activate public spaces in response to our nation’s changing demographics, housing shortage, evolving workplace technologies and need for equality in the public realm.

NMBW Architecture Studio is an architectural practice established in Melbourne in 1997, with an emphasis on urban engagement and culturally-specific design. They specialise in an analytical, research based approach, linking site-specific actions to larger urban and landscape concerns.
Monash Urban Lab distinguishes itself through its unique integration of practice-based design and urban planning research. The Lab combines multi-scalar architectural design investigations with policy studies focussed on transitioning to sustainable and equitable urban environments and communities at city and regional scales.
OFFICE is a not-for-profit multidisciplinary design and research practice based in Melbourne. Their projects span the intersections of built form, research, discourse and education. As a registered charity, the studio’s operations, processes and outputs are bound by a constitution to make projects for the public good.
Other Architects is a different type of architectural practice that sees the design of buildings as a means rather than an end. Its ongoing research projects include increasing suburban density by stealth, making architecture from everyday objects, and pursuing a return to the earth via natural burial. Other Architects received the 2018 IDEA ‘Prodigy’ prize and the 2021 Houses Emerging Practice Award. The practice’s work has been exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, NGV Triennial, Oslo Architecture Triennale, London Design Biennial, Aedes Architecture Forum, Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Biennale d’architecture et de paysage d’Ile-de-France.
Kopi Su is a new kind of interdisciplinary studio, working with clients and collaborators at the intersection of arts, culture and technology. Their vision is to elevate creative digital experiences, hoping to empower and advocate for digital equality with a diversity of people and the planet in mind.
Rowan Lear is a designer and writer currently living and working on Gadi Country, Sydney. His writing and designs engage with a meaningful aesthetics of repair, the responsibilities of designing for a long future, and the relationship between computational analysis and lo-fi sustainable practices. He teaches in the History & Theory and Interior Architecture courses at the UTS Architecture School. His work has been presented at the Oslo Architecture Triennale, The London Design Biennale and the Biennale d’architecture et de paysage d’Ile-de-France.
Selgascano was formed in 1998, established in Madrid. They are a small atelier, and it is their intention to remain so. They centre their work on construction process investigation, treating it as a continuous listening to the largest possible number of elements involved, from manufacture to installation. They allude to use plays and mechanisms that redound on disciplinary aims and are limited to search an understandable beauty by any human being. The studio’s main concern is focused on searching new possibilities for nature using artificial ways and applying borrowed technologies from other fields that are rarely mixed with architecture. All of this with the necessary intention that architecture loses ground, reducing its presence to one that serves as a way for new natures.
Space Caviar is an architecture and research studio operating at the intersection of design, technology, politics and the public realm. Founded in 2013, the office uses built work, exhibitions, publishing, writing and film to investigate and document contemporary modes of habitation and the spatialisation of social and political practice. Space Caviar’s work has been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Biennale Interieur, Vitra Design Museum and Nilufar Gallery, among others.
