ASCEND: Engineering a Sustainable Future is an exhibition demonstrating that pairing innovative minds and future technologies is helping to drive renewable energy solutions.

Deakin University has partnered with ACCIONA Energía to design and build a solar-powered vehicle to compete in the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge – a 3000 km race from Darwin to Adelaide. Briefed to create an aerodynamic vehicle capable of traversing central Australia’s rugged terrain, Deakin Engineering students have showcased strengths in engineering design and product development. Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, have been used to construct complex automotive parts not easily produced through traditional manufacturing techniques. Entered in the World Solar Challenge ‘Cruiser’ division the vehicle has been designed for practicality and acceptance in the current market to substantiate the potential for solar-powered cars in the future.

The vehicle named ASCEND is exhibited in The Atrium at Federation Square. Students and Researchers are on hand to answer questions about their designs, learning experiences, and the challenges they expect to face during the World Solar Challenge. Exhibiting ASCEND in a public forum allows the students to test their design concepts and invites the public to consider how a car of the future could look, the importance of blue sky thinking, and design innovation so that we can all live in the world we want. The exhibition runs from May 24 to May 25.

Participants

Deakin University

Deakin University’s School of Engineering offers an innovative approach to teaching through PODBL (Project-Oriented Design-Based Learning) such as the ASCEND Solar Car Project. Students get hands-on, industry-led experience while working on real-world problems. Students put together creative, original solutions and become job-ready for the challenges of the future.
